Outsider Witnessing
A Narrative Therapy Practice
A Narrative Therapy Practice
"Identity is created and sustained through our relationships with others."
In Narrative Therapy, identity is understood not as a static, internal trait that exists inside a person, but as a relational, social construction. Our stories gain power when they are heard, honored, and validated by others. Outsider Witnessing is a thoughtful practice where group members act as supportive witnesses to one another’s experiences. Rather than offering advice or fixes, witnesses share what resonated with them, what moved them, and how hearing your story touched their own lives. This process turns personal reflection into a collective experience, helping you see your strengths more clearly and connect your story to the broader world around you.
Outisider Witnesses serve as a carefully invited audience, offering recongnition and acknowledement of a person's preferred stories or identity.
Collaborating to string a story
A Narrative therapist will collaborate with you to string together meaningful moments from your life, creating stories that reflect and strengthen your preferred identity.
The Telling
We believe that preferred stories grow stronger when they are shared beyond individual therapy.
The Telling is when one person shares their story with a group of witnesses who have shared experience and are there to listen, not to judge or advise.
The Retelling
An Outsider Witness is NOT a passive participant. With the therapist's guidance, audience members are invited to reflect and share how the story resonates with their lives.
The person at the center of the story assumes the role of witness, observing the impact of their narrative on others.
The Retelling of the Retelling
Then, we switch roles once more and the person being centered is invited to reflect on impact of the stories shared by the witnesses.
This thoughtful process of moving back and forth between witness and speaker weaves our stories together, finding connections in our lives through shared themes and values.
For many people, the concerns they have about their lives contribute to a sense of isolation from others who may otherwise hold special significance.
