Christina is a therapist, supervisor, and co-founder of Mountain View Therapy. Although she still sees a handful of clients, these days she spends most of her time training and supervising the next generation of narrative therapists, and she's not currently accepting new clients.
Queer & Trans Folks • Gender & Sexuality • Polyamory & Nonmonogamy • Anxiety & Perfectionism
I love working with queer and trans folks, particularly people who are just starting to explore their gender or sexuality, at any age or stage of life. I also enjoy working with polyamorous and nonmonogamous clients, and anyone else stepping outside social norms to build lives and relationships that work for them.
Working with me involves a lot of questions and sarcastic humor. I get excited about small things, and I let people know when I'm not quite understanding something.
I check in often about whether we're talking about what clients want to be talking about, and I invite them to change the direction of the conversation anytime. I want people to feel like I'm listening closely to their words and remembering what matters to them.
I don't give advice or tell clients what to do, unless it's about TV shows or books. :)
Exploring Gender & Sexuality • Practices of Polyamory & Nonmonogamy • Relationships • The Power of Anxiety & Perfectionism • Social Norms & Expectations
Narrative Therapy fits with my belief that people are the experts in their own lives. How could I possibly know someone better than they know themselves? It never sat right with me that I could, and was even supposed to, have the authority to tell someone what they should do or what would help them most with their struggles.
What a relief to not need all the answers! And how empowering it is to think that people already have skills and knowledges for making the changes they want in their lives.
I’m also really interested in deconstructing dominant discourses. I’m always talking about the limiting effects of social norms and expectations, and helping people decide which ones fit for them and which don't. I love being able to expose and untangle the impossible, contradictory expectations that leave everyone feeling like they're failing, and to help people feel a greater sense of agency.
Growing up, I wanted to be a scientist. I graduated from MIT with degrees in Brain and Cognitive Sciences and Women's and Gender Studies. I loved neuroscience, but my gender studies classes changed my life. Learning about queer theory and postmodernism while navigating my own coming out as bisexual led me to change course and become a social worker. I went to Simmons University and set out to help LGBTQ+ folks and others who felt like they didn't fit the expectations they'd been handed.
When I discovered narrative therapy in graduate school, I knew I had found my therapeutic home. I was lucky enough to find the Safe at Home program at the Home for Little Wanderers, which was being run as a narrative therapy program at the time. I strengthened my skills and my passion for narrative therapy as I worked to help families get through some of their most difficult times. I went on to run a solo private practice for seven years before co-founding Mountain View Therapy with Bailey.
Outside of work, I like to read, watch a lot of TV, and hang out with my cats. I've seen Schitt's Creek a million times, and I could talk about Star Trek for hours. I also like taking walks and trying to identify birds.
