Finding a therapist who understands and affirms your identity can be exhausting. You shouldn't have to spend your therapy sessions educating your therapist, defending your identity, or wondering whether they really understand your community.
At Mountain View Therapy, we believe therapy should be a place where you can bring all of who you are.
Sometimes you may want to talk about gender or sexuality. Other times you may want to talk about your relationships, family, work, anxiety, grief, the future, or something that happened last Tuesday. We won't assume that everything you're experiencing is about your identity or ignore the ways that identity, community, culture, and larger systems can shape your experiences.
Exploring gender and sexuality • Relationships and intimacy • Coming out or deciding whether you want to • Family and societal expectations • Navigating transition • Your relationship with your body • Building queer and trans community • Experiences of discrimination and oppression • Finding language for who you are • Making room for queer and trans joy
We aren't here to tell you who you are or who you should be.
Narrative Therapy starts from the belief that you are the expert on your own life. Your therapist can ask questions, be curious with you, and help create space to explore the stories you've been told about gender, sexuality, relationships, bodies, family, and what a life is “supposed” to look like.
Together, we can get curious about which of those stories fit, which don't, and what your own experiences, values, relationships, and communities have taught you about who you are and how you want to live.
We can also pay attention to the larger systems around us. Sometimes the problem isn't something happening inside you. Racism, transphobia, homophobia, ableism, sexism, economic inequality, and other forms of oppression can have very real effects on people's lives.
You might be completely comfortable with your gender or sexuality and still want a therapist who understands your community.
Maybe you're dealing with anxiety. Maybe your relationship is changing. Maybe your family is complicated. Maybe you're grieving, overwhelmed at work, figuring out what you want next, or just feeling stuck.
You shouldn't have to choose between finding a therapist who understands what you're going through and finding one who understands who you are.
